Thunderbird Inn
2301 Surf Avenue
North Wildwood, NJ 08260
Operating on one of North Wildwood's largest motel properties, the Thunderbird was for years a primary icon of the famed Surf Avenue strip. Likely one of the island's first resort-type offerings, it featured a bar / restaurant / nightclub structure built into the complex, and an Olympic-sized pool in a courtyard completely protected from the street. The "T-Bird" was perhaps best known for its year-round operating schedule. Sadly, it fell to the wrecking ball, along with so many other motels in the area, after the 2005 season.
The Thunderbird occupied a large square on Surf Ave., between 23rd & 24th Aves., near the southern limit of North Wildwood. The
Bayberry Motel (since converted to condos) sat across 23rd to the north, while the
24th Street Motel and Palm Crest Motel stood side-by-side across 24th Ave. to the south. The Boardwalk was one long block away to the east.
- The Thunderbird was demolished after the 2005 season, along with several other motels on (or just off of) the Surf Avenue strip, including the 24th Street, Palm Crest, Flame Inn, and Sans Souci.
