History:

For decades, the starburst-shaped neon emblem of the 24th Street Motel served as a beacon to travelers and a familiar landmark to locals near the southern end of North Wildwood's Surf Avenue strip. After nearly a half-century of proud operation, the motel closed its doors for the final time in September of 2005. It was promptly demolished in favor of new condominiums.

History: An architectural expression of the creavitiy, exuberance and optimism of the nation at the dawn of the Space Age, the Satellite was arguably Will Morey's masterpiece, and one of the Wildwoods' signature "Doo Wop" landmarks. Despite a valiant effort to save it, the motel was closed and demolished after the 2004 season, setting off a wave of redevelopment (particularly in the Crest) that winter.

History: Highlighted by beautifully-symmetrical scalloped balconies and bowed railings, an illuminated triangular glass structure near its center and butterfly-roofed projections on the office and game room, the block-long Imperial 500 is true royalty when it comes to motels in the Crest.

History: Like many of the motels found in the Wildwoods, the Brigadoon took its name from a pop-culture reference (in this case an MGM movie from the 50s) that might seem obscure today. After sitting vacant for the past few seasons, the Brigadoon reopened for business in May of 2008.

History: The Breakers was one of the first modern motels built in North Wildwood, and, unfortunately, one of the first victims of the condo craze that swept the island during the early 2000s. The large letter "B" from the neon rooftop sign is apparently all that is left of the motel.

History: Built in the mid-1960's, the Ocean Breeze was clad in white stucco with blue trim. The structure featured a carport.

History: Amid a cluster of older, smaller buildings in North Wildwood's upper motel district, the Acropolis and nearby Regency Towers dominate the beachfront skyline. The sentinel nature of the 1970s-era Acropolis calls to mind the ancient structure for which it was named, which for thousands of years has loomed high above the city of Athens, Greece.

History: Renowned for its unique leaning walls, the Ebb Tide is generally credited as being the first "Doo Wop" motel in Wildwood Crest. Designed by the legendary Lou Morey, this classic helped foster in a new era of colorful and diverse mid-century architecture on the island when it opened in 1957. Ironically, the Ebb Tide would also become one of the first victims of the redevelopment phase that continues to sweep the Wildwoods.

History: The history of the Wingate property is one of the most dramatic in the island's history, at least in terms of physical transformation. Originally a small one-story motor court owned and operated by the Wingate family, the motel was expanded several times over the years. By the turn of the 21st Century, however, the property was tired and apparently on its last legs. It was rescued by the Morey Organization, which transformed it into the Starlux, the sparkling entity that ushered in the era of "Neo" Doo Wop in the Wildwoods.
